Preparing Your Vehicle for Winter
Winter in South Africa may not bring the extreme conditions seen in northern hemisphere countries, but cold mornings, wet roads, reduced visibility, and occasional frost still pose real risks for drivers. Proper preparation ensures your vehicle performs safely when conditions deteriorate — and helps you avoid costly repairs down the line.
Tyres, Brakes, and Visibility
Start with your tyres. Check tread depth — the legal minimum in South Africa is 1mm, but safety experts recommend at least 1.6mm for adequate wet weather grip. Inspect brake pads and discs for wear, as stopping distances increase significantly on wet or icy roads. Replace windscreen wipers that leave streaks, and ensure your washer fluid is topped up. Clean your headlights inside and out — foggy or yellowed lenses dramatically reduce visibility during early morning and late afternoon driving.
Battery, Coolant, and Electrical Systems
Cold weather puts extra strain on your battery. If your battery is more than three years old, have it tested before winter sets in. Check that your coolant mixture is correct — a 50/50 ratio of antifreeze and water is standard. Verify that all exterior lights are working, including fog lights and brake lights, as you will rely on them more heavily during winter's shorter days and frequent rain.
At HJ Bosch & Sons, our workshops across Pretoria, Centurion, and East London can perform a comprehensive pre-winter vehicle check to identify any issues before they become dangerous or expensive. Book a free assessment today.
